The brief of my project was to re-conceptualise and produce a flexible and permanent demountable modular classroom for the Australian government to support schools in meeting accommodation needs. I decided to use St Agatha’s Primary school to support the context behind the project, who have recently accepted to accommodate another primary school due to school renovations. The hexagon formation was chosen due to its ability to maximise space and flexible learning configurations.

Carbon neutral building designs are crucial for Sydney’s development. The current environmental issues including pollution, deforestation, climate change, depleting ozone layer and destruction of natural habitats are steadily increasing due to the increase of human activity. By designing carbon neutral office buildings, the rate of carbon emissions in Sydney can hopefully decrease and contribute to the conservation of resources for future generations.

My brief was to develop a safety carriage, in line with Transport NSW, that supports those travelling late at night. I have developed the carriage layout to support freedom of movement and overcrowding and developed train and platform branding to ensure all people know where to congregate when waiting for the train.

I have designed a Sustainable Housing Precinct System, using the land and recycled materials from a 1950s weatherboard house. The idea was to design a Sustainable Housing Precinct System that reduces excess water, electricity and food waste. The System is built within the precinct and the houses are designed to work with and as part of the system. The precinct runs off the single sustainable system containing a mini grid, a water treatment system, solar panels and other sustainable features that ensure the entire Precinct system is fully sustainable.

My product created is an experience, including a superhero device that surrounds the needle to elevate the fears associated with vaccinations. The aim is to encourage more children to have a positive experience. I also created various comic books and a correlating website which distracts the child, and also informs about the importance of vaccinations.

I have redesigned and developed a model of a potential concept for the new ANZ stadium, making it more sustainable and energy efficient. I am passionate about sport and thus, I wanted to design a facility, surrounding an aspect of sport and physical health. With the guidance of my peers and teacher, an idea stood out to me, redesigning the ANZ Stadium to become more energy efficient and sustainable.

My Major Design Project is a sustainable community centre where people can meet, grow their own produce and practice sustainably. It addresses the issue of new suburbs in Sydney not having a local community centre where they can meet with others and create connections. This can assist in building relationships with other cultures and people in their suburb. The incorporation of community infrastructure and sustainable developments aid in this creation of connections and community building.

My major project is a reduced waste toothbrush, where the user keeps the handle and only disposes of the bristles. This is achieved through an interlocking system, where the user connects and disconnects bristle piece onto handle. As a result, my product reduces waste and helps eliminate single use plastic, making it a sustainable alternative to the plastic toothbrush.

For my Major Design Project, I have designed and produced a prototype of garments that will help minimise the risk of sexual assault, by using smart interactive textiles, detecting any movement behind the consumer when running, immediately alerting them. I have designed a concept that can be developed and produced in a commercial setting in the activewear department. As sexual assault is a global issue, I have focused on empowering woman to feel safe when in a public place. I have created a prototype which clearly shows the main function and branding of my product/garment.

This project was a live brief, focusing on the College’s proposed redevelopment of the MSB Centre to support the learning of all students. The final model was designed and developed in line with the schools Learning Framework and values, as well as identifying opportunities to support 21st Century learning.

Whenever we go surfing, we need to carry our surf boards from the garage to the car, and load them on the roof rack. We then do this at the other end, and often we do not get a parking spot close to the beach. We often use the same beach because we know where the waves break, etc. Through my Major Design Project, I am going to design a means of safely storing our surfboards at the beach, thus avoiding all the hassle of carry boards to and from the beach.

My Major Design Project focuses on designing a manufacturer’s concept design of a cost-effective, aged care living space using the dementia design principles. The space will be designed to help people living with dementia to live more independently, by alleviating stress and confusion, whilst continuing to be supervised and monitored by specialist staff members.

Inspired by the negative environmental implications associated with traditionally used packaging options, my Major Work aims to significantly reduce the amount of plastic produced and utilised within food packaging. As such, I developed a material to package pasta which has the ability to completely dissolve within boiling water- resulting in zero waste!

My Major Design Project aims to address the issue of the high rates of stillbirths within Australia, by creating a wearable device for expectant mothers paired with an app. I developed this device for women to comfortably wear, allowing them to monitor fetal motion, and have the ability to access vital information on their baby’s movements. This device also allows the wearer to share the data with their medical professionals.

My overall aim of this project was to challenge the current stereotype that women in society are not seen as prominent power tools users. As most current power tools consist of a bulky, heavy configuration, I aimed to focus on ergonomics, practicality, and suitability of the product. I wanted to design a product that both women and girls could feel empowered and have the opportunity to feel confident and comfortable when handling power tools that once made them insecure and fearful of the unknown.

My Major Design Project explores the complex needs of children in foster care by producing a product that will fulfil the psychological need of owning something, and the feeling of belonging for children who are displaced within the Foster Care system - the average child in foster care move home five times in ten years. The product is a storage stool for children’s belongings which progressively grows in size by adding more levels, as they grow older. The stool also contains tactile components which aim to calm and relax the child, when they are feeling anxious or stressed when moving between different homes.

My Major Design Project focused on the changing social trend of the Australian teenager/young adult population watching streamed films on mobile devices in the luxury of their own bedrooms. The product I designed enhances and improves the way the tech-savvy population watches online content in the comfort of their bed, or as they relax in the sitting room.

My Major Work was to redesign and manufacture an alternate back brace for individuals with scoliosis, that focuses on improving the overall wellbeing of the developing female adolescent. I investigated how the brace develops simultaneously with the developing client. I have manipulated multiple aspects of the current brace to focus more on the client’s wellbeing, whilst also highly considering the medical components of the brace.

This project was constructed around designing and producing a prototype for an environmentally conscious classroom for a school that can be incorporated into communities across Australia. This project addresses the issue of the harmful environmental impacts which schools produce, and their effect on students’ wellbeing and the greater community.

The requirement of my Major Work was to create an extendable and expandable school uniform that would last a female primary school student from kindergarten to year six. This was a two-fold design: to minimise the environmental costs of the materials required for the garment, as well as the financial costs of constantly purchasing garments to replace those outgrown or damaged.
Sarah Wing
The aim of my Major Project was to design, investigate and produce a working prototype that can give an alert for the early stages on oncoming anxiety through prototyping a wearable device for children as well as exploring the technology that is used in health devices. Research show that if early detection of stress is spotted, an escalation can be avoided.
