Academy of Drama
The Academy of Drama offers opportunities for students who are interested in creative and performing arts to develop their confidence and craft throughout different performance opportunities. Some of the programs that we have on offer may include improvisational programs such as Theatresports as well as ensemble programs such as Drama Club. In addition, the highly anticipated biennial College Musical provides our students with a range of opportunities to be involved.
Theatresports is a form of improvisational theatre that takes place in a competition format. Teams are formed and are required to perform short dramatic scenes by playing different games that entertain and engage the audience. It develops our students’ ability to think quickly and creatively and requires them to be able to work with others.
It is a fantastic way for students to build their confidence in the performing arts. Students are given opportunities to compete in the friendly Theatresports Showcase, an informal competition held on College grounds to develop their skills. Students who are highly capable are invited to be part of the representative team to participate in the external Theatresports Schools Challenge where they are able to compete against other schools. The program is facilitated by qualified external coaches who have extensive experience in both educational and professional settings.
Drama Club is a hands-on opportunity for students to explore the world of drama in a fun and stimulating learning environment. Over the course of a semester, the program delves into a range of drama activities and exercises that encourage students to ignite their imagination and work toward creating their own performance at the end of the year. Activities include idea generation, team building, performance skills incorporating vocal activities and movement that focuses on stagecraft.
The College Musical Production is a highly-anticipated community event that is held every two years. It provides a platform for students to showcase their talents and passion in musical theatre across all areas including participation in the cast, backstage, costume and sets, orchestra, tech crew, hospitality and promotions. The musical is an inclusive production that caters for different levels of ability and is supported by all areas of the College. Some musical productions we have performed in the past include:
- Little Shop of Horrors
- Annie
- The Wiz
- Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat
- Grease
- High School Musical
- Beauty and the Beast
- The Addams Family - A New Musical Comedy
- Charlie and The Chocolate Factory
